When Edward returned to the house, Pinako was standing outside, awaiting his return. "Forget something, pipsqueak?" She asked, with a smirk.
"I'm not a pipsqueak!" Ed shouted, shaking a fist at his elder. "More like someone," He answered, tired of their usual banter back and forth. "You knew I'd be back." They'd already discussed it. Obviously, Nina couldn't be removed with Armstrong around, so Ed decided that they should come back for her.
"Where's Al, and Mr. Armstrong?" Pinako asked, looking around as if expecting their arrival.
"I couldn't let the Major question us returning here, he can't find out about Nina. Al's keeping him busy, so that I can have enough time to get Nina and find her a place to stay, safe." His serious tone turned merry, suddenly, and he grinned. "Thanks for keeping her safe, all this time. It means a lot to us..."
"You could have visited her, Ed." Pinako said, with a tone Edward couldn't quite make out. "She's not the only one who's been waiting for you boys for three years, you know." Those words were enough swipe the smile from Ed's face.
With a sigh, Ed's eyes fell to the ground. "I know... We've just been so caught up, and busy - it's no excuse, I know, but..." They had no home to go back to, that's how they'd always viewed it. No home, no family. To the family that waited for them, that was no excuse. It's true, is what Ed wanted to say. They were busy and finding the stone came first. He had to fix Nina and Al, that was his priority.
They had been back home for several days, but between training and and Winry working on his automail there wasn't much time to be social. The least Ed could do was spend some time with her, today. After all, he didn't know when the next time he was going to see her would be.
When he walked into the house the last thing he expected to see was Winry, staring at the ground with a wrench clutched in her fist and Nina at her side. "Edward," The harsh tone made Ed jump, he could feel his skin crawling. "Why don't you ever come visit us?" She asked, in that same tone. "Do we mean so little to you?!" Her eyes raised for the first time and Ed knew why she hadn't looked at him. She was crying.
"Is it that you only need me when you want something fixed?" She demanded, stepping towards him.
"No, Winry...It's not that, at all." Ed reached a hand out to her, before even realizing he'd done it. It wasn't until she brushed passed him dismissivley with Nina at her heels that he understood his own intentions. He half-turned and watched her leave, as Nina gave him one last look, before following.
"I messed up, huh, Den?" He asked the dog, who was laying on the floor nearby. With a heavy sigh, Ed sat down next to him and petted his head, softly. "Damn it, this wasn't supposed to be how this turned out." Somehow, Ed had pictured this whole, spending the day with Winry, thing to go by much more smoothly.
After spending some time alone, on the floor, talking to the dog, Ed got up. He wasn't sure yet what his destination was going to be, but he wanted to go for a walk. This time, he wasn't so sure he'd go to visit their mother. Leaving an uninterested Den laying on the floor, Ed exited the house without a sight of either Nina or Winry.
