The sound of a twig snapping nearby caught Ed's attention, and he looked around, suspiciously. He'd been so lost in thought just about anyone could be following him and he wouldn't have noticed. "Who's there?" He called, out, turning around.
"It's me," Came Winry's voice. Ed hadn't seen her in the density of the forest around them. Following her voice, he turned to face her, now. Before Ed could so much as get a word out she threw herself at him, clinging to his coat as the fabric entangled between her fingers. "I'm sorry... Ed. Really, I am - I just don't understand..."
This time she was in his reach, and this time he knew his intentions. Without so much as a thought, his arms encircled around her. "Winry..." She froze stiff at his embrace, unprepared for it. The way he said her name echoing in her ears. It was only a brief moment, though, before she slumped against him, gratefully. There was no dam to hold her back, now. She tried to stay in check - gulping back gasps several times before succumbing to her emotions. Small tremors quaked through her body and Ed turned and tilted his head, trying to catch even a glimpse of her face. That's when the tears started, streaming hot and silent down her face, then a whimper escaped her throat. Ed had no chance to say or do anything as she started to cry, years of supressed feelings finally boiling over.
As if suddenly realizing her mistake, just as she had opened up to him - without warning - she pulled away, pushed him from her, and fled.
"Winry, wait!" It was too late, she was already out of sight, in the dense forest. "Winry!" He yelled, looking around in every direction. "Winry!!" Stopping his futile attempt to find her, Ed leaned against a tree and looked skyward. He didn't understand what he was supposed to do.
